Renesas RL78/G21 MCU Launch: 34 µA/MHz Power and 10K-Unit Pricing for Buyers

Renesas Electronics announced the RL78/G21 low-power 16-bit MCU and additional RL78/G23 capacitive-touch options on October 28, 2026. The release includes specific power, ESD and suggested-price figures useful for smart-appliance BOM reviews. It is a manufacturer-confirmed product launch, not proof of a shortage, allocation or universal price change.

Illustrative Renesas RL78/G21 low-power MCU procurement news cover, with smart-appliance control boards and manufacturer reference prices
Evidence classification — confirmed manufacturer product announcement: Renesas states RL78/G21 and expanded RL78/G23 devices are available. Published prices are suggested resale references for 10,000 units, not real-time stock quotations. No MPN-level shortage, allocation, EOL, general price hike or extended factory lead time is established by the release.

What Renesas confirmed on October 28

The RL78/G21 targets low-power system control in air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, microwave ovens and related industrial or consumer equipment. The company reports 34 µA/MHz operating current, approximately half that of leading RL78/G13 products under its stated comparison, and ±4 kV HBM ESD tolerance. The MCU operates from 1.6 V to 5.5 V and adds UARTA communication and security/self-test features.

Renesas also expanded the RL78/G23 range with additional capacitive-touch channels for appliance human-machine interfaces. The RL78/G21 is for economical system control; enhanced RL78/G23 variants can consolidate touch UI and system control. The latter is a separate family/variant choice and should not be conflated with the RL78/G21.

Specification and pricing facts that affect a BOM

What the announcement does not prove

A new product family can be marked available by the manufacturer without every package, memory density or reel format being immediately on hand at a distributor. The release gives no factory backlog, channel inventory by MPN, allocation limits or committed lead time. Its reference price points do not demonstrate a market-wide MCU price decrease or increase. Separately, historical DRAM, foundry or other MCU price trends cannot be applied to a particular RL78/G21 part number without a dated like-for-like quotation.

RFQ checklist for appliance and industrial buyers

  1. Request the full orderable RL78/G21 or RL78/G23 MPN, not only the family name; specify memory size, package, pins, temperature grade and packing method.
  2. For the 44-pin 128 KB or 256 KB versions, use the published $0.56/$0.77 at 10,000 units only as a reference benchmark. Obtain written quotations at your actual quantity and delivery terms.
  3. Ask for current available quantity, factory-committed lead time, MOQ, date code, reel/tray packaging, warranty and traceability for each exact MPN.
  4. Check hardware/software compatibility with existing RL78/G13 or RL78/G23 designs; verify touch-channel requirements and any IEC 60730 self-test library use.
  5. Document approved channels and relevant PCN/EOL notices by exact MPN. Do not infer an EOL or supply shortage from the new launch.
  6. For forecast orders, separate sample availability, pilot builds and volume production; secure written delivery commitments and review NCNR conditions.

Buyer takeaway

Renesas’s October 28 RL78/G21 launch provides unusually concrete power, ESD and quantity-specific suggested-price benchmarks for low-cost appliance controllers. The purchasing opportunity is to compare total BOM cost and migration effort against approved RL78 designs. Exact MPN inventory, actual transaction price and delivery remain quote-dependent and unverified here.

Independent JZP Components procurement analysis published October 29, 2026, based on Renesas’s October 28 announcement. Market context from DRAMX, 21IC and TrendForce was screened separately; no unsupported inventory or MPN-level shortage assertion has been added. Suggested prices are manufacturer references at 10,000 units, not firm commercial offers.
